Roof types

Which Roof Is Right for Your Home?

The best roof isn't always the most expensive one. Here's how the three most common options hold up in Central Texas, so you can compare before we come out.

Most popular

Asphalt Shingle

Typical lifespan20 to 30 years

The most affordable option and the most common roof around Austin. Comes in many colors and is quick to install and repair.

  • Lowest upfront cost
  • Ask about impact-rated shingles for hail
Best for heat

Metal

Typical lifespan40 to 70 years

Reflects the sun, which helps keep the attic cooler through long Texas summers. Costs more upfront but lasts much longer.

  • Can lower cooling costs
  • Very little maintenance
Classic look

Tile

Typical lifespan50 years or more

Clay or concrete tile fits Spanish and Mediterranean-style homes. It's heavy, so the roof structure has to be checked first.

  • Lasts the longest
  • Needs a structural check before install

Lifespans are typical ranges and depend on installation, ventilation and maintenance. We'll recommend what fits your home and budget.

Poorly installed tile roof with a wide, uneven gap and crooked tiles along the valleyWhat to avoid
Know before you hire

What a Bad Tile Job Looks Like

This tile roof was installed poorly. Rain runs down the valley, where two sides of the roof meet, so that's where sloppy work starts to leak first. Here's what's wrong:

  • The gap in the valley is wide and uneven.
  • The cut edges are rough and don't follow a straight line.
  • Some tiles sit crooked or out of line instead of lying flat.

What a good tile job looks like

  • Rows run straight, and every tile lies flat and snug.
  • Valley cuts are clean and even, over metal flashing.
  • No cracked, chipped or loose tiles are left behind.

Questions to ask any roofer

  1. What goes under the tile?Tile sheds most of the rain, but the underlayment underneath is what keeps water out of your attic.
  2. How will you fasten the tiles so they hold up in hurricane winds?
  3. Will you check that my roof can carry the weight of tile?
  4. Can I keep a few spare tiles for future repairs?
  5. What does the warranty cover?

Is the estimate really free in Austin too?

Yes. We come out, look at your roof or your project, and give you an itemized price in writing. There's no charge and no obligation.

Which Austin-area cities do you work in?

Austin and nearby cities, including the ones listed below on this page. If your town isn't listed, give us a call and we'll tell you if we can get there.

How much does a new roof cost in Austin?

It depends on the size and pitch of the roof, the material you choose, the condition of the decking and any permit your city requires. We'll give you a free written estimate that breaks it down line by line.

Do you take small jobs, like just painting or one slab?

Yes. You don't need a big remodel to call us. We take on painting, framing, tile, stucco and concrete slab jobs on their own, and each one gets a free written estimate.

Do you work with insurance on hail damage?

Yes. We inspect the roof, document the damage with photos and give you a written estimate to share with your insurance company. Call your insurer first so they can open the claim.

Someone knocked on my door after a hail storm. Should I sign?

Take your time. After big hail storms, crews from out of town go door to door, and roofers don't need a state license in Texas. Call your insurance company first, get two or three written quotes, and never pay in full before the work starts. We're happy to inspect your roof for free either way.

Do I need a permit?

Many Austin-area cities require a permit for roof replacements, additions and some remodels. Rules are different from city to city, so we'll tell you what your job needs and pull the permit when one is required.

Are you licensed and insured?

Texas doesn't issue a state license for roofers or general contractors, so ask any company you're considering for proof of insurance. We'll gladly show you our certificate of insurance before any work begins.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. Financing is available for roof replacements and bigger projects like remodels and additions. We also accept cash, checks and all major credit and debit cards.

Do you do air conditioning work?

No, not at this time. We focus on roofing and general contracting. For AC repair or replacement, please call a licensed air conditioning contractor.
